Ride-On Mower Attachments That Can Save You Buying a Tractor

Coen KeilyBy Coen KeilyJune 24, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

For many property owners, the idea of upgrading from a ride-on mower to a compact tractor becomes tempting as maintenance responsibilities increase. Compact tractors offer impressive versatility, but they also require a larger financial investment and often take up more storage space. Before making that leap, it is worth considering just how much modern ride-on mowers can do when paired with the right attachments.

Many people view ride-on mowers as machines designed solely for cutting grass. While mowing remains their primary function, a wide range of accessories and attachments can significantly expand their capabilities. In some situations, these additions may provide everything a property owner needs without the expense of purchasing a tractor.

The key is understanding which jobs can realistically be handled by a ride-on mower and where the limitations begin.

One of the most popular attachments is a tow-behind trailer. This simple accessory can transform a ride-on mower into a practical transport vehicle for moving materials around a property. Garden waste, logs, mulch, soil, tools, and fencing supplies can often be moved far more efficiently using a trailer than by hand.

For owners of larger gardens and smallholdings, this capability alone can save countless hours of labour throughout the year. While a compact tractor may offer greater towing capacity, many routine transport tasks fall comfortably within the capabilities of a ride-on mower and trailer combination.

Lawn sweepers are another useful attachment that can reduce the need for additional machinery. These devices collect leaves, grass clippings, and other debris as they are pulled behind the mower. During autumn, when large amounts of leaves accumulate across lawns and pathways, a sweeper can significantly reduce maintenance time.

Instead of manually raking and collecting debris, property owners can cover large areas quickly and efficiently. This not only improves appearance but can also contribute to healthier lawn conditions.

Spreaders are another attachment worth considering. Whether applying fertiliser, grass seed, or certain lawn treatments, tow-behind spreaders help distribute materials evenly across large areas. For properties with extensive lawns, this can simplify seasonal lawn care and improve results.

The ability to maintain turf effectively often reduces the need for more intensive corrective work later. A healthy lawn generally requires less intervention and fewer resources over time.

Aerators provide another example of how a ride-on mower can take on additional responsibilities. Lawn aeration helps improve soil health by allowing water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the ground more effectively. Tow-behind aerators can make this task considerably easier, particularly on larger properties where manual methods would be impractical.

For many homeowners, these attachments provide access to maintenance practices that would otherwise be too time-consuming to undertake regularly.

At around the point where buyers begin comparing ride-on mowers with compact tractors, they often discover that their existing machine may be capable of far more than expected. Suppliers such as Ron Smith frequently highlight the growing range of attachments available, helping customers understand whether expanding their mower’s capabilities could be a more cost-effective solution than upgrading entirely.

Rollers are another valuable option for certain properties. Lawn rollers help create smoother surfaces and can improve the appearance of established turf. They are particularly useful following seeding projects or after winter conditions have left uneven areas across the lawn.

For property owners focused on achieving a well-maintained appearance, rollers can be an effective addition to the maintenance toolkit.

Dethatchers also deserve attention. Over time, lawns can develop a layer of dead grass and organic material known as thatch. Excessive thatch can restrict the movement of water and nutrients into the soil. Tow-behind dethatchers help remove this material, encouraging healthier growth and improving overall lawn quality.

Again, this is a task that becomes far more manageable when completed mechanically rather than manually.

Snow blades and snow removal attachments are available for certain ride-on mower models as well. While they may not match the capability of a compact tractor in severe conditions, they can be highly effective for clearing light snow from driveways, paths, and access routes.

This seasonal versatility allows some owners to continue using their equipment throughout the year rather than only during the growing season.

Despite these advantages, it is important to recognise the limitations. Ride-on mowers remain primarily mowing machines. Heavy ground preparation, loader work, large-scale material handling, and demanding agricultural tasks generally remain within the territory of compact tractors.

The decision therefore depends on the nature of the work being performed. Many property owners assume they need a tractor when, in reality, a few carefully selected attachments could provide the additional functionality they require.

Cost is often a deciding factor. Purchasing several attachments typically costs significantly less than investing in a compact tractor and its associated implements. Storage requirements may also be easier to manage, particularly for residential properties with limited space.

The growing range of attachments available today has blurred the line between ride-on mowers and more specialised equipment. While tractors continue to offer unmatched versatility for demanding applications, many homeowners discover that their mower can handle a surprising variety of tasks.

Before committing to a larger machine, it is worth taking a closer look at the accessories available for your existing equipment. In many cases, the right combination of attachments can provide the extra capability needed to maintain a property efficiently while avoiding the cost and complexity of purchasing a compact tractor.
